06 Jul 1966, Manila, Luzon Island, Philippines — Original caption: Manila: Manila Fans Kick Beatles. British famous Beatles, John Lennon (right, dark glasses), George Harrison (left), and Paul McCartney (center, back to camera), look surprised at the Manila International Airport as they are jostled by angry Philippines before their departure for home on July 5th. The mob cursed and jeered them as a result of what the Manila public and press considered “an affront” to the Philippines’ first lady Imelda Marcos, whom the Beatles stood up when she had prepared a luncheon for them and several hundred children on July 4th. President Marcos apologized for the airport incident saying that “there was no intention on the part of the Beatles to slight the first lady or the Government of the Philippines.” — Image by © Bettmann/CORBIS
